The Capital One Corporation
On July 27, 1994, Signet Financial Corporation publicly announced that it was spinning off OakStone Financial, which was its credit card division. Richard Fairbank took over as the new CEO. But in October, 1994, Signet gave OakStone Financial a new name – Capital One. This company became fully independent in February, 1995 when the spin off process was completed.
Capital One continued as a major credit card and consumer lending service provider between 1994 and 2004. Capital One recorded outstanding success in this industry. The management of Capital One ascribes their success to the effective use of data collection to develop demographic profiles. These profiles enabled it to personalize the credit services offered to its customers.
In 1999, Richard Fairbank announced the diversification of Capital One’s services. New moves were made to start offering home and auto loans, insurance as well as phone service. But in 2005, Capital One expanded into retail banking. It acquired several retail banks including Hibernia National Bank based in Louisiana. And in 2008, Capital One also acquired North Fork based in New York and Chevy Chase Bank.
In June 2011, Capital One began the process to acquire American ING Direct. After the acquisition process was completed, Capital One rebranded ING Direct, in November 2012, as Capital One 360. Another major credit card company, HSBC was acquired by Capital One for US$31.3 billion, in August 2011.
